The Story Behind Hills Market
As their tagline states, Hills Market is “Columbus’ Premier Specialty Grocer.” They focus on providing high-quality products from trusted, local brands. They have two locations across Columbus, Ohio: Worthington and Downtown.
Hills Market Worthington opened its doors in 1993, spearheaded by husband and wife duo Nancy and Roy Kerscher. The goal was to create a space that could provide services to meet the needs of the community. In an interview with Columbus Underground following her retirement in 2011, Nancy discussed how Hills Market’s customer service shines in their ability to make an impact as more than just a grocery store.
“We are a service provider that happens to sell groceries,” Nancy said. “We love food, Ohio, and our community, and [we] try to show it through the things that we do.”
20 years later, Hills Market expanded its reach into Downtown Columbus. Hills Market Downtown held a grand opening on March 19, 2013, and very quickly became the talk of the town. It was born out of an old industrial car shop that lent itself well to creating a hip and rustic feel for the store and earning it the title of the hottest spot in the Discovery District to eat and mingle.
Community-Focused with a Local Touch
Hills Market doesn't hold back when it comes to supporting the communities they serve. Since its inception in Worthington, the Hills Market stores have hosted some of the best food events in Columbus while spotlighting local brands and creators. Trucks and Brews supports local food trucks throughout the summer, Charity Happy Hour helps charities earn money by selling pizza and drinks, and Pancake Breakfasts offers a brunching event for community members to take part in.
Hills Market is all about meeting community needs, and they accomplish this in part by providing premium, specialty items with a focus on locally sourced products. Their shelves are filled with local fruits and veggies, cheeses, and even home-goods—all are marked with a 4x6 card alerting customers to where in Ohio the products were sourced.
“There’s been a huge shift to local products [and] hard to find things,” Mark Cooper, Assistant Store Manager at the Hills Market Downtown, explained, “because people care about the quality of [the] ingredients [in their] products.”

“90% of our customers are regulars,” Mark said. “So they come in, grab a treat or two they like, sometimes we talk about it, and then we’ll see them tomorrow.”
